Joan and Graeme Self Drive Tour .
In the Summer of 2024 Joan and Graeme travelled on one of their bucket list tours to visit some of the USA's most iconic National Parks
Setting off from Newcastle International Airport, with a speedy pass through security and immigration, they flew to Amsterdam to catch their connecting flight to
DENVER, Colorado
DENVER was a very pedestrian friendly city. We took the chance explore the city
Next it was on to Estes Park and a two night stay at the Historic Crag's Lodge
This is a perfect base to explore Rocky Mountain National Park.
The wilderness area includes 355 miles of hiking trails, 147 lakes, 77 mountains taller than 12,000 feet, and the opportunity to see elk, bighorn sheep and moose. In 2014, National Geographic named Rocky Mountain National Park as one of its best trips in the world.
Next stop was RAPID CITY nicknamed the City of Presidents with its life size statue of every American President.
A very special visit to see Mount Rushmore National Memorial for the lighting up ceremony and a full day exploring the unreal terrain of Badlands National Park.
The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient horses and rhinos once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.
We also took the chance to visit BUFFALO WYOMING and the chance to spend an evening in the traditional YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
The park’s natural wonders, spanning 2.2 million acres, from hiking trails that wind through stunning landscapes to opportunities to spot diverse wildlife like bison, elk, and grizzly bears.
We split our stay between WEST YELLOWSTONE
With easy access to the park’s west entrance, we explored iconic attractions like Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
We spent four days exploring the park. The geysers were amazing and there was so much wildlife. Yellowstone National Park is not only a popular destination for those looking to explore the great outdoors, but it is also home to the biggest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states. Bison, elk, black bears, wolves, and much more roaming freely throughout the park.
