GLAMIS CASTLE
The childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, majestic Glamis Castle even got a mention from Shakespeare who referred to Macbeth as the “Thane of Glamis”. In reality, the doomed Scottish king wasn’t – that was just a bit of old Will’s imagination. But fairytale Glamis, in the heart of Angus, has been the ancestral seat of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne since the 14th century.
The late Queen Mother always loved the place, which has been described as Scotland’s most beautiful castle, and her younger daughter Princess Margaret was born there. As a child, she and her brother were notorious for getting up to some cheeky pranks – such as pouring freezing water from the ramparts onto unsuspecting arriving guests. See how many red squirrels and herons you can spot in the magnificent Italian and Walled gardens before touring Glamis’s rooms, hung with priceless works of arts and tapestries. The castle is, of course, rumoured to be haunted by many ghosts, including the legendary “Monster of Glamis”. One story even claims that a vampire child is walled up in the ramparts.

SCONE PALACE
Scone Palace (pronounced Scoon), poised above the RiverTay with the Grampian Mountains in the background, has been the historic crowning place of Scottish kings since at least the Ninth Century.
Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II were among the 42 monarchs crowned here on the Stone of Scone, which was also known as the Stone of Destiny. The original stone has now been moved to Edinburgh Castle, but it has been replaced by a replica where visitors can pose for photos. Originally the site of an early Christian church, the Palace, built in red sandstone with a castellated roof, has been the home of the Earls of Mansfields for the last 400 years. Take time to stroll around the nature trails in the 100 acres of woodland gardens with their giant redwoods and noble firs. Then see if you can find your way out of the star-shaped maze, planted in a mixture of copper and green beech to resemble the Mansfield tartan.

THE SETTLE - CARLISLE LINE
An army of 6,000 navvies toiled in extremely harsh conditions during the late 19th century to hew this 73-mile wonder of engineering out of the rugged Yorkshire Dales and the Cumbrian Fells. FLYING SCOTSMAN

Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster, the first locomotive of the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). It went into service on 24 February 1923 with number 1472. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class—the most powerful locomotives used by the LNER at that time.
By 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in London, the loco had been renumbered 4472—and given the name 'Flying Scotsman' after the daily 10.00 London to Edinburgh rail service which started in 1862.
The British Empire Exhibition made Flying Scotsman famous, and it went on to feature in many more publicity events for the LNER. In 1928, it was given a new type of tender with a corridor, which meant that a new crew could take over without stopping the train. This allowed it to haul the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service on 1 May that year, reducing the journey time to eight hours.
In 1934, Scotsman was clocked at 100mph on a special test run—officially the first locomotive in the UK to reach that speed. The test run proved to the LNER's directors that steam power could provide high speeds, negating a plan for the company to use diesel power on its high-speed services.
